What has happened?

Significant work is required to safeguard our Grade II* listed building. This work has been identified in a recent quinquennial inspection report.

Main works to protect its structure include:
1. Repairs and overhaul of the roofs to the North and South Nave, Aisle, Chancel and Transept, including the replacement of thousands of slipped/damaged roof tiles
2. Complete overhaul of the rain water system and seriously damaged downpipe; Remove, renovate and replace leaking iron guttering and downpipes
3. Traditional re-pointing (lime/mortar) of areas of defective exterior brick work
4. Replace defective areas of lead flashing
5. Complete relevant repairs to flat roof and flashings on the East Chapel and Sacristy

Failure to repair the Church could lead to a sudden and catastrophic failure of the building and closure of the Church. Therefore, the works are absolutely vital to guarantee that the Church can continue to stand with pride at the heart of the local community and be a safe place for people to visit, as well as, enabling the beautiful building to still be there for people’s children and grandchildren.

St Stephen’s Church is a Grade II* listed building, built in 1873, and was the last of the five Cheltenham churches to be designed by John Middleton.

How do we hope to raise the funds to safeguard our beautiful Church for the future?

The appeal was launched last June 2015 and since then we have been carrying out a dedicated programme of activities including an appeal mailing to members of our regular congregation and local parish, trust and grant applications and various social events. We will be spending £15,000 of our limited reserves and will continue to work really hard applying to a range of grant making trusts. We do not have the money to cover this repair work and this is why we need the help of the community and have launched our ‘St Stephen’s Roof Appeal’.

Many people enjoy the services at our church, whether it be to attend the candlelit Christmas services, a joyful wedding, christening or to pay their last respects to a much loved friend. This church belongs in the hearts of many people and we pray that they will now help us with this very essential project.

Our promise

We have set up a designated appeal fund and will use any donations received from this appeal solely for the repair and upkeep of the building.

If you are reading this page and feel that you would like to make a donation to the appeal, it would be very gratefully received. We can assure you that your donation would be put to good use and would safeguard this wonderful building for future generations.

What your donation could buy…

£100 would pay for the repointing of 10 metres of stonework

£150 would allow us to buy a length of new cast iron gutter

£500 would allow us to buy 150 roof tiles

£1,000 would allow us to shot blast and paint the gutters

£5,000 would pay for the scaffolding on the south side of the building

On the walls of our Church are the names of many generous donors down the years. If you would like to make a significant gift, possibly in memory of a loved one, and would like to discuss how this could be recognised, we would be happy to discuss this with you. Every penny really will make such a difference.

Local support for our appeal…

Councillor Tim Harman writes…

“St Stephen’s Church is one of our gems not only as a place of worship and where the Community gather but also as such a stunning structure. I am delighted to support the appeal for the very necessary works that need to be undertaken.

Can I ask you all to contribute in whatever way you can so that the future of the Church can be safeguarded for today and for the future”

MP for Cheltenham Alex Chalk writes…

“St Stephen’s Church plays a vital role in the local community. It is very important that we try and raise the money needed for the repairs to ensure that the church is a safe place for residents to worship and is protected for future generations.”

Dame Janet Trotter OBE DBE (Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire) writes…

“St Stephen’s is at the centre of a very special community which has a neighbourhood mission. My sister and I found everyone both loving and caring when I was wheel chair bound following an accident and in special need of support. I encourage everyone in the area to support its ministry and its redevelopment.”
